Who We Are

Based in Cambridge, Inclume is a creative architectural studio that delivers bespoke, crafted design projects.

Our work spans a variety of scales and disciplines, ranging from bespoke residential, cultural, workplace and educational architecture, to the design of installations, interiors and exhibitions.

We are a collective of experienced architects and designers who have worked in both Cambridge and London-based award winning practices. Our experience spans a comprehensive array of work, including highly contextually sensitive sites such as conservation areas, which allows us to effectively deliver projects from start to finish following RIBA Work stages.

Our designs embody an interest in natural light, material quality and crafted finishes, a perspective that we believe produces architecture that is contemporary yet contextually sympathetic towards its surroundings. Ideas are initially developed through sketches and model making, then evolved through rigorous computer modelling, both of which are a fundamental part of our creative architectural workflow.

Creative Process

Successful and unique building projects stem from a good client-designer relationship. This is a central theme in our studio, contributing to our ability to unlock potential in commissions of all sizes. We enjoy what we do and try to foster an enjoyable and inspiring working relationship with clients. Throughout the process we aim to distil the complexities of architecture and construction down into workable elements that provide a stable foundation for a collaborative and imaginative project.

Our briefing process allows us to respond to our clients’ needs. We listen, question, and ensure the project requirements are clearly understood before embarking on the design process, in order to get the best out of a scheme. We aim to tell your story, not ours, resulting in a building that reflects your unique way of living.

Rather than bringing preconceived ideas to projects, we look for areas which have the most potential or problems that need solving, and see this as an opportunity. We bring experience to projects but remain open minded, creating project-specific design solutions that result in bespoke, finely crafted architecture. While demonstrating a clear understanding of materials and craftsmanship, we aim to create architecture with a distinctive aesthetic that is contemporary in its detailing and proportions. Taking all this into account, we are realistic and open about managing the project budget.

We are hands-on and practical, using model making to test design ideas. We spend considerable time on the creative design process, as we know this leads to enjoyable and thoughtful buildings. We realise that you are likely to be occupying the spaces we create together for many years to come, so it is important that we take time to get it right. We are inquisitive, investigative and imaginative.

Along the way we have fun, collaborate with others that we know and trust, and aim to have meetings that are interactive, informal and enjoyable. We tell stories through architecture, reimagining buildings and landscapes in a way that reflects the inhabitants’ values. We appreciate that good architecture both takes from and gives back to its surroundings.

An architectural project is one of the biggest financial commitments most people will make in their lifetime. It is important to us that our clients feel fully involved throughout the process and are committed to a shared vision, as we believe that good design adds value.

We love what we do, and this carries through to all of our projects. Creativity and passion are embedded in our studio culture and underpin our diverse and distinctive output, allowing us to create simple and minimal spaces that enrich people’s lives.
