Undulate Urban Regeneration, London

Urban regeneration public art installation by Inclume Architects, Cambridge

Architectural urban regeneration public art intervention to refresh and enliven an underpass that connects two communities.

The underpass is used by pedestrians on their daily commute and by families walking children between nearby residential housing areas and two local schools. Part of a local architects urban regeneration programme, this project reinvigorates the area with a screen of timber cladding that undulates along the full length and breadth of the site. The timber is injected with colour, providing a positive sense of wellbeing and welcoming, playful appearance.

The staggered timber sections would be fixed directly to the existing underpass walls which helps to soften and add texture to the stark concrete while allowing views of the new planting behind. New planting areas are created either side of the underpass creating small pockets of lush open green space in an otherwise urban area. While benefiting users, it also improves drainage and opportunities for wildlife.

Working alongside local residents on the design and installation would provide a sense of ownership and purpose for the community with a sustainable agenda.
